Two Baskets

Things keep falling and I keep running. Tap the left or right half and I will carry it to that basket. The bar up top says what we are sorting by, and it changes without warning.

How long?

A task switching game where the rule keeps moving

One thing falls at a time. Ponoki catches it and waits, and you tap whichever side of the screen it belongs on. He runs it over, drops it in, and comes back for the next one.

The bar along the top tells you what you are sorting by right now. Sometimes colour, sometimes shape, sometimes size. It changes without warning, and every object carries all three at once, so a warm pointy thing pulls both ways and only the rule on the bar settles it.

What task switching is

Task switching is what your mind does when it puts down one set of rules and picks up another. Researchers call it set shifting, and they call the pause it costs a switch cost. It is why a short interruption takes back more than the minute it borrowed: the rule you were holding has to go somewhere, a new one has to come up, and then the first one has to be found again.

Two Baskets does that on purpose every few seconds, and puts it somewhere you can watch it happen.

How to play

Tap the left or right half of the screen, or use the arrow keys. Warm, round and big always belong on the left. Cool, pointy and small always belong on the right. There is nothing else to memorise, and that is deliberate: the rule should be the hard part, not the controls.

Partway through, the two baskets trade places, so warm now belongs on the right. The bar still tells you the truth. What trips you is the habit you spent the last minute building.

Nothing is taken away

Send something to the basket it does not belong in and the basket declines it. Ponoki picks it back up and carries it home so you can try again. No points are deducted, nothing resets, and there is no way to lose.

How long a session takes

One minute, ninety seconds, or two and a half minutes, whichever you pick before you start. The session is timed. A single decision never is, so you can take as long as you like on an object that is pulling both ways.
